Responsible tanning at Maximum Fitness

Look good and feel great

Today, more than ever before, it is essential to adopt a responsible approach to safer tanning.
At Maximum Fitness we offer the latest technology in indoor tanning, concentrating on this safer than prolonged sun exposure alternative.
Our Tansun Symphony sunbooth machine is one of the most advanced tanning machines in the market and will provide you with the very best and fastest tan possible from any indoor tanning system.  It is time-controlled, reducing the risk of over exposure; goggles, to protect your eyes, will be available at all times.
Sessions will last between 3 to 12 minutes depending on individual skin types.  This will be discussed and assessed prior to booking any course or individual tanning sessions.
We would recommend a maximum of 3 sessions per week and around 20 sessions per year.  After-sun lotions to moisturise your skin are advised.

When to tan and benefits.
A healthy looking tan makes you look and feel good.  UV light positively affects general well being by decreasing lactic acid and blood sugar levels, increasing heart rate and stimulating the production of vitamin D which is vital for the synthesis of Calcium  - the mineral essential for maintaining a healthy nervous system, including the brain, as well as being involved in fat metabolism and muscle contraction.

How long will it take me to tan?
The time taken to achieve a tan as well as its body distribution depends on individual skin types.  Customer safety is the main priority at all times.  We recommend to start with low exposure time of 4-6 minutes rising to 10–12 minutes as your tan develops.  Whilst building a tan we advice 3 tanning sessions per week allowing 48 hours between each session, dependant on skin type.  Most individuals would reach their tanning peak after about one  hour of regular tanning, approximately 7-10 sessions.

Why do I go brown?
Melanin is a naturally occurring skin pigment.  Generally, the darker the skin, the more melanin it contains.  When the skin is exposed to UVB light, cells situated in the deeper layers of the skin called melanocytes, produce increased amounts of the tanning pigment melanin.  This is transferred to the epidermis, the more superficial layer of the skin where UVA acts upon it by oxidising it, resulting in the melanin turning brown and creating a ‘tan’.

The melanin absorbs some of the UVA and stops it reaching the more sensitive layers of the skin.

What about safety and precautions?
As with most things it is a question of moderation.  If you do not tan in the sun you are unlikely to tan in indoor tanning systems and your skin is likely to be sensitive to sun light and tanning equipment would not be suitable for you.  Sun burn produces real damage to the skin and must be avoided.  Moderate exposure to UV light under controlled and supervised conditions can have some beneficial effects.

Studies published in the International Journal of Dermatology found no increased skin cancer risk with UVB phototherapy. [1]

Indoor tanning is best when the skin is clean and free of perfume or strong soaps.  Medications such as birth control pills, antihistamines and tranquilizers, or the condition diabetes are contra-indicated.

In addition, it is used for the treatment of eczema, psoriasis and seasonal affective disorders (SAD) improving the symptoms and the quality of life of these individuals.

Source 1 - UVB phototherapy and skin cancer: a review of the literature. E. Lee, MD, J. Koo, MD, and T. Berger, MD. The International Journal of Dermatology Vol 44, 355-360. 2004

The study reviewed all prospective and retrospective studies from 1966 to 2002 that attempted to quantify or qualify and additional skin cancer risk from UVB phototherapy. 3400 participants were involved.
Conclusion: UVB phototherapy is a common treatment modality for psoriasis and other skin conditions. All studies showed no increased skin cancer risk with UVB phototherapy.
